Taylor Frankie Paul says she is stepping away from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, creating a major question for a reality franchise that has increasingly found its most consequential drama happening away from the cameras.
Paul announced Monday that she no longer wants to move forward with the Hulu series. In her statement, she thanked the networks that had supported a potential return but said the current situation had become too painful, while accusing castmates of piling on during an already difficult period.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Hulu had no comment on the development.
An exit that changes the center of the show
Paul has been one of the defining personalities of Mormon Wives since its launch. That means this is not the equivalent of a supporting cast member quietly declining another season. Her personal life, friendships and conflicts have repeatedly shaped the show’s larger story, making her presence part of the franchise’s basic architecture.
Season 6 has been moving forward amid months of upheaval surrounding Paul, including legal and custody disputes that affected production. The fifth season arrived Sept. 10 with a shortened five-episode run after delays. Cast members have also been openly arguing across social media, blurring the already-thin line between what belongs to the series and what now unfolds in public before episodes can catch up.
That is the central problem Hulu faces. Reality television depends on real conflict, but it also depends on enough structure to transform that conflict into a show.
